Arrival procedures
When do I register my address after moving to Japan?
Mid- to long-term residents must register their address within 14 days of establishing a residence in Japan. The deadline starts when you settle at that address, not automatically on the day you land.
File a moving-in notification (転入届, tennyū todoke) at your city or ward office. Bring your residence card and passport; if your passport says the card will be issued later, bring that passport. At the same visit, ask about health insurance and pension registration if you are not covered through an employer. Your My Number notification follows address registration; applying for the physical My Number card is a separate step.
What may vary
This procedure is for mid- to long-term residents, including people whose residence card will be issued later. Temporary Visitors do not register this way. Confirm whether your accommodation can be registered. For children under 16, a cohabiting relative aged 16 or older normally files the notification. Ask the municipality about insurance and pension arrangements for your circumstances.
