資格外活動許可申請書しかくがいかつどうきょか しんせいしょ(shikakugai katsudō kyoka shinseisho)
Part-time work permission (activity outside your status)
Permission for Student and Dependent status holders to do eligible paid work for up to 28 hours a week. Obtain approval before starting work; see the guide for application options.
When you need it
Student (留学) and Dependent (家族滞在) status do not allow paid work on their own. Obtain permission before starting. Blanket permission allows up to 28 hours a week in total in eligible work. For students, the limit during official long school holidays is eight hours a day; that exception does not apply to Dependent status. Adult-entertainment work is excluded. Applying is free and you do not need a job offer. Wait for approval before working and check current processing times with immigration.
Where to get it
Download the form (PDF or Excel) from the Immigration Services Agency page linked above — it has a dedicated version for students entering Japan for the first time. Submit it at the regional immigration office (地方出入国在留管理局) for your address, or — if your Student status is for more than three months — hand it to airport immigration when you land, where the permission is stamped as your residence card is issued. Many schools collect and check the form for you, so ask the international office first.
What to bring
- The completed application form (1 copy), signed by hand
- Residence card (original)
- Passport (original)
- Student ID card or certificate of enrolment — schools usually require it; the airport does not
- For an individual permission (個別許可, e.g. an internship or self-employed work): a contract or letter from the organisation describing the work, hours and pay
- No fee — the permission is free

Common mistakes
- Starting a job before the permission is granted — even a trial shift without it is unauthorised work and can block your visa renewal.
- Writing your total planned years in Japan under 在留期間 — it asks for the period printed on your residence card.
- Leaving the job and employer lines empty — write 未定 and tick その他 instead; blank boxes get the form returned.
- An address that doesn't match the back of your residence card — update the card at the ward office first.
- Typing the signature or letting someone else sign — it must be your own handwriting.
- Forgetting that 28 hours is the total across all jobs, including overtime, and that the holiday rule only applies to your school's official breaks.
- Taking work in adult-entertainment venues (pachinko halls, hostess bars and similar) — permission is never given for these and it is grounds for deportation.

EN · Excuse me, I don't speak much Japanese. I have Student status and I would like to apply for permission to engage in activities other than those permitted (part-time work permission). I have the application form, my residence card, passport and student ID. I don't have a job yet. Please tell me if anything on the form is wrong. Simple Japanese or English would help.
